LEAD MECHANIC

SALARY: $3,706 - $4,505

Under general direction, makes minor and major electrical and mechanical repairs on gasoline, diesel, electric, and CNG powered vehicles, trucks, police units, and other equipment; keeps vehicles and equipment in safe operating condition; and performs related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
Locates, inspects, and diagnoses electrical and mechanical defects in a wide variety of vehicles and equipment including, but not limited to, automobiles, trucks, street sweepers, dump trucks, backhoes, mowers, police units and accessories, sprayers, edgers, blowers, weed eaters, chain saws, etc. Performs minor and major maintenance on, and repairs to, vehicles and equipment including tune-ups, cooling systems, replacement of water pumps, fuel pumps, clutches, brakes and axles, tire repair, mounting and balancing, hydraulic systems, front end repair, exhaust systems, ignitions, door locks, and window motors; fabricates special equipment by using gas and arc welders; cleans shop area; e-mails other departments and personnel regarding vehicle and equipment service due dates; maintains records of work completed, materials used, and labor time; and performs related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES
Graduation from high school or G.E.D., and a minimum of four years experience is required. Supplemental automotive courses and A.S.E. certifications, are highly desirable.

Knowledge of:
equipment used in street, sewer, and park maintenance; gasoline, diesel, electric and CNG powered vehicles, and the equipment and tools necessary for their maintenance and repair; municipal budget process; diagnostic tools and equipment; preventative maintenance methods; California Department of Motor Vehicles rules and regulations pertaining to the City fleet, and regulations governing emission control standards and related state requirements; and knowledge of commercial truck BIT inspections, above ground fuel inspections, and diesel truck particulate trap systems and certifications.

Skills/Abilities to:
diagnose and make repairs to, and perform maintenance on, a wide variety of vehicles and equipment; operate various tools and equipment including, but not limited to, diagnostic equipment, grinders, welders, and compressors; prepare and read electrical schematics; and understand and follow oral and written directions.

Must possess:
a current California driver license. If appointed, must obtain a Class “B” California driver permit within six months of hire date; and obtain the Class "B" license within the one-year probationary period.

SELECTION PROCESS
  1. Completion of Montclair’s application form is required.

  3. Candidates possessing the highest qualifications will be invited to participate in a structured oral interview.
  4. Successful candidates’ names will be placed on an eligibility list from which a selection will be made. The City Manager will make final appointment, upon recommendation of the Redevelopment/Public Works Director.
  5. The top candidate must pass a background investigation and a preemployment physical including a drug screening, prior to hiring.
